Press Room: Press Release
Costa confident that the recall election will be held as scheduled Contact: Ted Costa, 661-482-6175 SacramentoTed Costa, lead Proponent of the California Recall Election and Chairman of the Davis Recall Committee, today said he is confident that the recall election will be held as scheduled on October 7, 2003. "The effort by Governor Gray Davis and his supporters to avoid the recall election or delay is useless," said Costa. "He and his special interest supporters, public employee unions and trial lawyers, have filed a dozen lawsuits in a dozen different courts trying desperately to find a court that would save Davis from the voters; He's lost everywhere he's gone until he finally went to the liberal mecca, the 9th Circuit Court." But Costa said, "Even the 9th Circuit Court will not save Davis from facing the people. I'm convinced the full court will reverse the ruling of the 3 judge panel and, if they do not, then I will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court where I am certain wiser heads will prevail." Costa criticized Davis' supporters for attempting to "jerk around the people of California with "hot coffee"lawsuits and criticized the arguments put forward as redundant and insulting to minorities. "The arguments made by Davis' team have all been made before in court and those issues have been adjudicated and settled by previous courts," said Costa, "and the ruling resulted in agreements and orders for electronic or optical voting machines to be in use by March of 2004 and for punch card voting machine to be acceptable until then. They're bringing up an old issue that has been settled. Worse, their arguments are based on a premise that minorities are too dumb to know how to vote; that is an insulting argument that is really wrong. I am insulted and I expect others are also," said Costa. "Over two million California citizens signed petitions to call an election to recall Governor Gray Davis for gross mismanagement of the people's money . . far more than required by the state constitution," said Costa. "Polls show that 8 million or more voters want Gov Davis removed from office now. The constitution requries an election to be held within 80 days of qualification. This recall election is the people taking democratic action to fix their state government that is broken. The people deserve to know that their constitution will be followed and their voices heard," said Costa. "I'm confident that we will have the people's business back on track within 48 hours and I would advise Mr. Davis and his supporters to stop any further efforts to block it," said Costa. |
